Dear West Prairie Parents, Students, and Staff,

I hope to clarify some of the confusion around the events that transpired over last weekend regarding COVID mitigation. The Governor, the Courts, and CDC are not in complete lock-step on these revisions. Although not initially or explicitly endorsed by the Governor or ISBE, the Center for Disease Control ruled, effective Monday, February 28, 2022, masks will no longer be required to be worn on school buses that are transporting students for school-related programs. This includes transportation to and from school, athletic events, field trips, etc., when that transportation occurs on a school bus.  Masks will be optional while riding on West Prairie buses.

Also, on Friday, February 25, the Illinois Supreme Court denied an appeal in the legal fight over COVID-19 restrictions in schools. However, the court removed the temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by Judge Raylene Grischow earlier this month. West Prairie has been mask optional since February 7, 2022.

Governor Pritzker has also announced that he is withdrawing the executive order that required students and staff in Illinois schools to wear masks, effective Monday, February 28, 2022, based on the new rules easing mask-wearing issued by the CDC.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support as we continue to educate West Prairie students in-person while adapting to the uncertainty brought by rapidly changing policies and directives.

Sincerely,

Guy Gradert

Superintendent
